Music as Formation
Our Children's Minister often tells people that she is a Christian today, not because of any sermon or Sunday School class, but because the gruff old postman who was her Choir Director, "taught me about our Episcopal worship and my place in it."
David Brown and Marci Dickinson are both excellent teachers who will open the way to musical worship to anyone who will take the time to join one of our four choirs. The music available at St. Andrew’s enriches our worship and allows the lessons in the words of our prayers to enter our souls with song.
The Music Program for St. Andrews Church includes several opportunities for music-making and for having fun at the same time.
We have a remarkable, though small, choir whose interests and abilities are truly fascinating. Our love of good music that fills our souls is the source that unites us.
Our Senior Choir has section leaders we can depend on for strong music support and occasional solos, but it is our volunteers on whom we depend for strength and sustenance. Singing is like any good exercise, the more you do, the better your soul is filled.
We try to maintain a good mix of the standard church and seasonal repertoire that is within our grasp.
In any given month we will sing selections from early chant through the Baroque choral tradition in the Mozart and Haydn classics through the strong Anglican tradition of the Wesleys and right into contemporary giants of our day, including our own Bill Roberts and organist Marci Dickinson. in fact, we will soon begin using her entire musical setting of the communion service which she wrote in honor of our 150th year of ministry.
The Senior Choir rehearses on Thursday nights at 7:30 and is open to all high schoolers and adults with an interest in singing with us. We would gladly welcome your joining our ranks, on any basis, including seasonally. If your joy is in Christmas music or in Eastertide music, you can come join us for those rehearsal and Sundays only.
We also have a Junior Choir that rehearses on Wednesday nights 6;30--7:15. We sing about once a month and have a good time learning the truths of our faith we sing and the Bible. We welcome anyone from second grade through sixth grade to come and share our joyful music-making.
Come, make a joyful noise!
